Axolotls are real salamanders from Mexico that keep their feathery gills their whole lives, and that smile is just how their face looks. The easy pages have big shapes for preschool and kindergarten, and the medium pages add water plants and underwater scenes for older kids. None of them use characters from any game or show, so kids can pick any colors they like: pink is the classic, but real axolotls also come in gold, gray and dark brown.
Easy: big shapes, thick lines · Medium: more detail
Tip: tick the pages you want, then print just those.

What is an axolotl?
An axolotl (say "ACK-suh-lot-ul") is a salamander from the lakes of Mexico City. Most salamanders grow up and leave the water, but an axolotl stays in the water all its life and keeps its feathery gills. It's also famous for being able to regrow lost legs. Wild axolotls are critically endangered, though many live as pets and in labs.
Which page should we print?
- Little kids: the cute axolotl, the baby axolotl and the axolotl with a balloon have big, simple shapes.
- Kawaii fans: try the kawaii axolotl, the axolotl with boba or the axolotl in a teacup.
- Parties and holidays: the birthday axolotl and the Christmas axolotl.
- Science time: the realistic axolotl and the axolotl life cycle work well in a lesson.
What colors are real axolotls?
Pet axolotls come in pale pink with red gills (called leucistic), golden yellow, gray-brown with speckles and nearly black. So there's no wrong answer, and a rainbow axolotl is always welcome. Love cute animals? See our cute coloring pages and dinosaur coloring pages.
Tips for Coloring an Axolotl
- Start with the gills. Those frilly gills are the star, so make them a bright pink or red.
- Try real axolotl colors. Pale pink, golden yellow, gray and dark brown are all real.
- Or go wild. Rainbow and galaxy axolotls are always popular.
- Color the water last. A light blue background makes the axolotl stand out.
